Bruxism is excessive teeth grinding or jaw clenching. Bruxism is a common behavior. There are two main types of bruxism. One occurs during sleep and one during wakefulness.
The causes of bruxism are not completely understood, but probably involve multiple factors:
Several symptoms are associated with bruxism, including:
In addition to a positive effect on migraine and other muscle-related headaches, we can properly remedy teeth grinding (bruxism) at Kliniek Dokter Frodo with Botox. Botox (botulinum toxin) is used as a treatment for bruxism. The target of the treatment is the masticatory muscle. This ‘masseter hypertrophy’ is what diligently increases bruxism for most people, and the larger ‘masseter’, the stronger the muscle.
A strong masticatory muscle does not like being still. This creates a vicious circle: the bigger the muscle, the more one is inclined to use it, and the stronger the muscle.
The teeth grinding reduces (or is completely resolved) because we relax the masticatory muscle using targeted Botox injections. This causes the muscle to become weaker and smaller. Depending on your personal situation, it may occur that the teeth grinding is not fully resolved after the treatment. Depending on how much of a ‘hurry’ you are in, we can carry out another Botox treatment after two weeks. If you have the time, we recommend waiting until your masticatory muscle decreases in size, which will cause the tension (and therefore, the grinding) to gradually diminish.
Yes, the Botox treatment for teeth grinding and/or jaw clencing is a safe treatment.
The treatment will take 5-10 minutes.
No, there is no downtime.
Immediately after treatment you will feel that you can’t use your jaw muscle easily. Within two weeks you will have the optimal result of the treatment.
After three to six months you need to repeat the treatment, but this differs per person and per situation. The more often the treatment is carried out, the longer the result of the treatment will stay.
