Why antioxidants are so important

Antioxidants are a collective name for vitamins C and E, the mineral selenium and bioactive substances found in vegetables, fruit, tea and red wine, among others. These substances ensure that the harmful effects of free radicals are limited. Free radicals are aggressive substances in the body that are caused, among other things, by smoking, poor diet, drugs and UV radiation. But what exactly are the consequences of free radicals and what can you do to control the influence of these radicals?

Free radicals and antioxidants

Oxidation is an entirely natural process. In doing so, so-called free radicals damage body cells. These aggressive substances can also disrupt cell division. In the long run, oxidation may result in cardiovascular diseases or cancer. There can also be a reaction in the skin in the form of DNA damage, wrinkles, age spots and affected connective tissue. Despite the fact that there are always free radicals in the body, there are various means to limit the increase of free radicals so that the skin repairs and strengthens. Antioxidants are one example.

How do you get enough antioxidants?

I recommend that you pay attention to the following things when it comes to skin aging and limiting the harmful effects of free radicals.

  • Eat enough fruits. Plums, strawberries, melon and (forest) berries in particular contain many antioxidants.
  • Vegetables are also full of antioxidants. Eating asparagus, broccoli, carrots and cauliflower, in particular, is recommended to combat the harmful effects of free radicals.
  • Lycopene in tomatoes helps your body clean up harmful UV rays. Nevertheless, it is wise to protect your skin properly when you go out into the sun. So apply sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30 and use a good face cream to protect your skin against the sun.

Are antioxidants unhealthy?

Although antioxidants are very healthy, don't overdo their use. For example, researchers from Finland have found that high doses of the antioxidant vitamin A do not lower the risk of lung cancer among smokers, but increase them. An excess of vitamin A is also not good for pregnant women and children. It is therefore important not to consume too many antioxidants. When you eat a healthy and varied diet, you already get enough of most antioxidants. However, a little bit of outside help is not superfluous.
